This time, MilitaryFares.com is going to look at travel destination Juneau, Alaska.  An interesting fact about Juneau is that Juneau is tucked away in a rainforest! Temperatures range from the 80’s in the summer to the 30’s in winter. The moderate climate means that there are a variety of things to do–all the time.

Juneau is also the home for USCG Juneau Coast Guard Base. The base is responsible for covering several hundred square miles of ocean performing activities such as ice patrolling, search and rescue, and monitoring the activities of the oil and fishing industries operating in Alaska.

Things to Do in Juneau

So, what fun things are there to do in Juneau when off duty?  We’re glad you asked!  There are great outdoor activities to do with the family or as a single person.  For instance, there is a Gold Mining and Panning Adventure tour that is featured in the summer. This trip consists of a historical tour of Juneau and ends with a chance for you to pan for “real” gold at the Last Chance Basin.

Want something a bit more adventurous? Remember that Juneau is in the rainforest so there are several fun outdoor activities to explore. You should try a zipline tour with Alaska Zipline Adventures through the Alaskan Rainforest.  Or, perhaps you want to explore Juneau via jeep.  Well, there is a jeep tour that explores the city’s historical center and progresses to view glaciers and beaches on the tour route.

One of the most unique things about Alaska and Juneau in particular is the abundance of wildlife. To see them up close and personal, try scheduling a whale watching tour. That’s right, you can tour with experienced professionals to see whales, seals, and other indigenous wildlife.  Would you like to look at some of those glaciers close up?  Let MilitaryFares.com help you find the right package.

You can choose from kayaking, canoeing and cruise tours based around the Mendenhall glacier. Other unique things to do are sport fishing, flightseeing/glacier trekking, dog sledding, heli-skiing, and taking a sea plane tour. Of course there are the more traditional vacation activities as well like snow skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and swimming.

Bet you’re hungry after all that activity. Why not try a salmon bake?  Experience Alaskan salmon grilled over an open fire along with other native dishes such as Tongass wild rice pilaf or Chilkoot baked beans.

Lastly, Alaska is also a great place to get married! According to Alaska Adventures Juneau, there are several wedding packages available. There is a Glacier Top Wedding Adventure that is simply amazing. The bride and groom are shuttled by helicopter to the top of a glacier where the ceremony is performed.
