Note: A good resource for a variety information is the web site http://www.Travel.State.gov.  There you can find additional information about some of the topics we’ll mention in this article.  Hopefully by following the tips and information provided, you will have a great vacation and have plenty of exciting stories to tell and remember for years to come.  Consider the following recommendations.

Check the Weather reports– from different sources

Checking the weather is one of the first things you should do when traveling abroad. Checking the weather from different sources can give you insight about what different weather models are saying about weather patterns in the area you plan to visit.  It can help decide what you should pack, what you should be wearing and even if the trip should be postponed if necessary.  (Some airlines will not provide accommodations if delays and flight cancellations are caused by weather.  Knowing what to expect can help you prepare and possibly save you money.)

Learn about Laws and Rules about the Country before you get there

There are a lot of small differences in U.S. Law and other countries’ laws that could get you in trouble without you even knowing it!  For instance, did you know you might need to have an International Driving Permit to go along with your U.S. Driver’s License?  Apparently, many countries do not recognize your U.S. State Driver’s License alone.  So, before you jump in that rental car and turn on the ignition switch, make sure you have the proper documentation to drive.

And, how about that picture you are about to take—make sure that you are not violating any rules of that country by taking pictures of buildings and facilities that might land you in jail.  As strange as it may seem, it is a real possibility.

Be Prepared for Emergencies

With so many things being unknown when traveling abroad, knowing where the nearest U.S. Embassy and local authorities are will be a big help.  Having that information readily available will keep you from having to search for it if needed.  Also, remember to have your personal information available.  Emergency contact numbers, next of kin addresses, Visas and other travel documentation will help get you through the process of getting assistance if ever needed.

Finally, the U.S. State Department has a program called STEP (Smart Travel Enrollment Program) that might be a good tool to use.  It is a free service for citizens traveling abroad.  You can enroll your trip with the nearest U. S. Embassy, and it will help you stay informed and connected with information pertaining to your trip.

Using the tools mentioned and doing the research on the places you plan to visit during your travels, you should have a very safe and enjoyable vacation.  As always check MilitaryFares.com for the best prices on tickets, cars and hotels!
