How to Enjoy a Limited Holiday

grocerystoreTravelThanksgiving and the holiday season in general is a time for caring and sharing.  Traveling to vacation spots and visiting family are a big part of the holiday tradition.  We, at MilitaryFares.com, have posted much about travel destinations and  have offered discounted tickets on our web site  to assist with your travel plans.  But, what if you have neither the time nor the resources to keep up with tradition?  What could you possibly do to still have a memorable and enjoyable holiday?  Answer: Take  what we’re calling a limited holiday… which is  a semi-virtual vacation by traveling through cuisine!  That’s right,  a limited holiday!   This time we are posting about what you can do alternatively to enjoy your vacation in case you are limited by time or resources.

Often we go places to not only experience the location and culture, but also to experience the food and history.  If you do have the limits of time and resources, then a staycation with a twist might just be what you need.  Let’s say you only have a couple of days because you have to work prior to a holiday or have been scheduled to cover a shift unexpectedly during the holiday.  You can still plan to enjoy yourself by letting the internet be your ticket to a world of travel, flavor and culture (until you can actually get to your real destination).

For example, even though you may not be able to travel to Germany or to your Island getaway in a couple of days, a little research and a trip to your local grocery store could be all you need to experience some of the flavor and culture you seek. foods

Start your journey by going to one of the several sites which lists information about the city or country.  Research the native foods and cuisine then head over to an online cookbook like www.BettyCrocker.com or www.bhg.com (Better Homes and Garden).  They have great recipes that will help you experience the foods you would most likely find at your travel destination.  And if you wanted to be really adventurous, there are many personal recipe sites that people share family recipes on.   Try  www.epicurious.com   or maybe go to www.cookbooks.com .  That would really give you an opportunity to try local cuisine.dinnerplate

The excitement starts when you go to the grocery store to pick up the ingredients for the meal and maybe do some light decorations to add to the ambiance.  I know that this isn’t exactly what you might have had in mind, but it beats the alternative of not doing anything.  Besides, by researching and using the internet to explore your travel destination, you might make a contact and find out something useful and exciting about a destination for when you actually get to travel.

As always be safe, and check out MilitaryFares.com for discounted tickets.  Enjoy your holiday season and Travel well!
