Happy 4th! But Remember, Safety First

fireworks21Happy 4th of July and remember ‘Safety First’!  Independence Day holds a lot of different meanings for a lot of people.  Everything from memorial tributes to family reunions, the day is widely celebrated.  We here at MilitaryFares.com wish you all a Happy 4th and may your memories of the day be many and sweet.

As you celebrate the day, and all future holiday and vacation days this summer, travel well and we hope the safety suggestions mentioned below add to your celebratory experiences!

Make Sure You Are Rested, Alert and Prepared When Driving

If driving to your holiday destination or vacation, make sure you get plenty of rest before starting your journey.  Sheer excitement can give you an initial burst of energy and false impression that you are energized and good to go when you really aren’t.  So be mindful of how much sleep and rest you actually get before trips.  Being mentally alert is imperative.  Also being prepared for the unexpected is equally important.  That’s why you should start out with a full tank of gas and pack “Trip” food for your travels.  Some stores and gas stations that would normally be opened may not be or might have shortened hours of operation.

Make Sure Food Is Properly Prepared, Cooked and Stored

For a lot of people, holidays and vacations equal (=) food!  Everybody likes to eat as part of the celebration.  From chicken barbecued to steaks on the grill—appetites will be satisfied!  If you are doing some of the cooking, make life enjoyable for your guests by making sure your hands and utensils are clean and food is properly prepped by following the recommended guidelines on packaging.  Then, cook and store food at proper temperatures.  Beware of the time anything with mayonnaise in it is left out and cover all foods to reduce exposure to insects and bugs.

Make Sure to Remember Fireworks Safety

Handling fireworks isn’t for everybody, especially young kids.  Make sure a responsible adult is always around and that fireworks are used properly.  Though pranks may look funny in videos, people have been seriously injured when they have used fireworks improperly or have disregarded warnings on labels.  Also when viewing fireworks maintain proper distance and be aware of any safety zones that might be in place.

Watch Out for the Small Ones

When family and friends get together, everyone wants to have a great time.  And because you are among friends and family, guardians and parents often have a tendency to let down their guards and give the kids a little more leniency and freedom to play.  You should still maintain watch over younger children.  This is very important especially around swimming pools or crowded places.  It only takes a few seconds to lose track or sight of someone in a crowd or slip away and fall into a pool.

Identify “designated” watchers amongst your group.  That way, there will always be someone with the responsibility of helping keep the young ones safe.  Enjoy your weekend!  And, make fun memories this Independence Holiday!
